Caravan Cubbies

Our Story

All children love cubby houses. It’s a space they can make their own and let imaginations run wild. As proud parents of four young children and running a small construction company, my wife and I always knew a cubby house was going to be on the agenda.

Recently I spotted a beautifully renovated and petite caravan for sale on the side of the road. Instantly I’m thinking it would make an ideal cubby for the kids – it’s old, small and surely it wouldn’t be too expensive. As it turns out, there is a bit of a retro caravan revival going on and the owners wanted a fortune for it. That, unfortunately, was the end of that.

A few weeks later at a local park whilst entertaining the kids, I spotted something… sitting in the backyard of a house that adjoined the park was a very old, tiny and extremely dirty caravan. It had an inch of leaves on the roof and looked like it hadn’t moved for twenty years, but it was very cute and similar to the one I had seen offered for sale.

Curiosity got the better of me, so I struck up a conversation with a lady who happened to be gardening in the yard. “Nice van,” I said. She replied, “Ha! It’s just a junk room and I want to get rid of it.” Without hesitation I responded, “That would make a great cubby for my kids.” The words, “You can have it,” came back. “I’m happy for it to go to a good home”. Needless to say, the kids were very excited, and so was I.

After collecting the caravan and giving it a good clean as well as a thorough checking over, it was obvious that there was no chance the kids were getting the van as a cubby! Apart from a couple of broken windows and a few dents, it all worked – lights, brakes, everything.

There it was – I’d fallen in love! This baby was going to be fixed up and was destined for the road. Unfortunately, this created a problem, as although the kids liked the idea of going camping in the caravan, they had their hearts set on it being a cubby. Here is where Caravan Cubbies was born. When the first cubby was complete, I sent photo’s around to some friends. Everyone loved it so much that I made some more, and now we are building them to order. My kids couldn’t be prouder of their new cubby house.
